Founded in 2000, bet365 was created by Denise Coates, who had been running her family's betting shop since 1995. The online sports betting platform went online in 2001, with Denise Coates still classed as the joint CEO of the company and majority shareholder, with 50.1% of shares.

As her father, Peter Coates, had originally opened the betting shop in 1974 and gone on to become the chairman of Stoke City FC, bet365's owners (the Coates family) bought the club in 2006. As of May 2023, bet365 is still listed as the main sponsor of the club, replacing Britannia Building Society. In 2021, the Stoke City stadium was also sold to bet365; it is now called the 'bet265 Stadium.'

In 2018, after the overturning of PASPA in the US, bet365 announced that it would expand into the North American markets through a partnership with Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City. It has since launched in several states since, notably Ohio.

At the Global Gaming Awards London 2023, bet365 was awarded the Online Sports Betting Operator of the Year, a title it has regularly won.
