UK GGY tops £5bn in another annual increase

The non-remote British gambling industry generated gross gambling yield (GGY) of £5.44bn for the period April 2014 to March 2015, marking a fifth consecutive annual increase.

UK GGY tops £5bn in another annual increase

That was one of a range of figures on the UK gambling industry released by the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC), and the total GGY is a 2% year-on-year upturn, with £3.25bn of the total coming from sports betting, up from £3.17bn.

It is the first time that the figures include in-part GGY from operators based overseas, due to a new licensing regime that requires all operators offering their services to players in the UK to possess a UK gambling licence that was implemented in November last year.

Casinos accounted for £1.16bn of the total, ascending slightly from £1.11bn.

GGY from bingo was £662.3m, down from £672.4m and GGY from arcades was £371.7m, down from £377.5m.

The overall GGY total excluded the National Lottery, which accumulated GGY of £3.23bn, increasing from £3.1bn, with the total including both remote and non-remote gaming.

Gaming machine GGY across all sectors was £2.5bn, in comparison with £2.4bn.

William Hill is listed as the operator with the highest number of premises with 2,312, followed by Ladbrokes with 2,166, and the overall total number of betting shops in operation was 8,819.

A total of 201 potential betting integrity failure reports were notified to UKGC and 42% of the reports were on football betting, with 25% being on tennis betting.
