Online sports betting reaches new highs in France

The French gambling regulator ARJEL has revealed that the nation’s turnover from sports betting has reached a new high of €636m (£567m). The French sports betting markets are seeing their largest growth in years thank to the record revenues fuelled by returning users to a resurgent horse betting market.

Despite these promising figures, Arjel reported its slowest Q2 growth in four years (22%); however France hosted the European Championship at the same time last year, significantly boosting the domestic market. This meant that Q2 gains would always struggle to match the heights of previous years.

The report detailed the revitalised horse racing market which has seen its first year-on-year growth for four years, with revenues reaching €239m (£205m), up 9% from last year. The increase is a result of more returning users, up 1.1 percentage points.
