Betfred’s World Matchplay pledge raises £32,000 for charity Stroke Association

Betfred is to donate £32,000 ($41,490) to the Stroke Association following its charity activity at the 2020 World Matchplay.

The operator, title sponsors of the PDC darts event, had pledged £50 per 180 hit during the tournament, along with a £10,000 bonus if last year’s total of 330 was matched or beaten.

The record tally was beaten, with the final total of 333 raising £16,650, plus the bonus.

The £32,000 will be donated to the Stroke Association, chosen as this year’s partner in support of Sky Sports commentator Rod Studd, who is recovering from a recent stroke.

The tournament was won by World Matchplay debutant Dimitri Van den Bergh, who beat Gary Anderson 18-10 in the final.

Betfred co-founder and CEO Fred Done, said: “I’m delighted to be writing such a big cheque, especially after a record breaking number of 180s this week.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the players, PDC staff and Sky Sports for putting on such an entertaining event in challenging times.”

Ahead of the 2020 event, Betfred extended its contract as title sponsor of the World Matchplay until 2022. The operator is also title sponsor of the World Snooker Championship, rugby league’s Super League and golf’s British Masters.
