GamCare and Interventions Alliance to tackle gambling harm in criminal justice system
GamCare has joined forces with Interventions Alliance for a new initiative designed to confront gambling-related harms within Britain’s criminal justice system.
A 2017 study found a higher prevalence of gambling-related harms among UK prison populations.
As a result, GamCare and Interventions Alliance will use this opportunity to “test and pilot” a new approach to supporting people with gambling issues.
The programme will offer eight sessions of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). These will be conducted in a group format and focus on exploring harmful gambling, as well as links between gambling and crime.
“We are delighted to announce this partnership with GamCare as we believe there is vital work to be done to support those in the criminal justice system who have a gambling addiction,” said Suki Binning, Chief Social Worker and Executive Director at Interventions Alliance.
“Research on gambling addictions show that those with a gambling addiction are more likely to commit crime, so this intervention is one part of the solution.”
This builds on prior work done by GamCare and GamCare’s network partners, as well as other organisations and groups.
Ultimately, it is hoped that this new programme will complement and expand existing work by “creating new opportunities and partnerships that will enable further support, learning and insights gathering.”
Anna Hemmings, GamCare’s CEO, commented: “We are excited to work with Interventions Alliance on this new partnership.
“It provides a valuable opportunity to build on the work we already do, combining our gambling support with their criminal justice and offending behaviour expertise.”
