Career Highlights

Mark has built a long and highly respected career in corporate security. His experience spans more than two decades across retail, telecommunications, national infrastructure, and, most recently, the UK lottery sector.

A Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Mark Hughes is recognized for his ability to lead complex, large-scale security operations for multinational organizations that operate in highly regulated environments.

Mark began his career in security in 2000, joining the retail empire of British billionaire Mike Ashley as Head of Security & Store Commercial Operations at House of Fraser.

Over five years, he developed a strong foundation in physical security, loss prevention, and operational risk management in the UK retail sector. This early exposure to large estates and frontline security laid the foundations for later work in complex corporate environments.

After almost two years at Borders, the multinational book and music retailer, where he served as General Manager of Security, Mark’s career took a decisive step forward in 2006 when he joined Vodafone, beginning a tenure of more than 16 years with the telecommunications giant.

Beginning as Senior Fraud Investigation Manager, Mark was promoted after almost 18 months to Head of Security Operations, where he played a key role in managing and implementing changes to Vodafone’s cybersecurity protocols.

It was here that he gained essential leadership skills in physical security, cybersecurity, and operational resilience. As a result, in 2009, Mark was appointed Government Security Director at Vodafone, a role that involved working with UK police and intelligence agencies.

In August 2011, Mark was appointed Chief Security Officer of Vodafone UK, a position he held for over 11 years. As CSO, he led Vodafone’s entire security function across the UK, overseeing internal security solutions, cybersecurity, physical and logical security, and strategic risk management.

After leaving Vodafone in 2022, Mark joined Smart DCC as Chief Information Security Officer. At Smart DCC, the organization responsible for delivering Britain’s smart meter energy system, he focused on protecting critical national infrastructure and managing security risks within one of the UK’s most sensitive digital ecosystems.
