Tan Kong Han

After serving at the helm of Genting Berhad for 18 years as President, COO, and Executive Director, Dato’ Sri Tan Kong Han was appointed in March 2025 to serve as the Malaysian conglomerate’s CEO in a significant development for the company.

Major Achievements

Tan Kong Han has a long and illustrious career behind him, which began in earnest with his appointment as Group Chief Operating Officer at Tanjong Public Limited Company. He held this position for 4 years before transitioning to Genting Berhad, where he was immediately appointed to serve at the company’s helm as President and Chief Operating Officer.  

Tan Kong Han has also held numerous high-ranking positions in subsidiary companies of the Malaysian conglomerate, which ranked 54th on the 2024 list of Fortune 500 companies in Southeast Asia.  

Under his leadership, Genting has expanded internationally and has opened resorts in Sinapore, Hong Kong, New York, Malaysia, the UK, Las Vegas and Miami. The company now employees around 50,000 people worldwide.

Employment

Having begun his long and illustrious career in the world of investment banking, Tan Kong Han became Group Chief Operating Officer at Tanjong Public Limited Company in 2003.  

Following 4 years in this position, Tan Kong Han left to join Genting Berhad in 2007, becoming President and Chief Operating Officer on 1 July – roles he occupied for 18 years.  

Simultaneously, Tan Kong Han has also occupied several upper-management positions at Genting Berhad’s subsidiary companies, such as Genting Plantations – where he became Chief Executive and Executive Director at the start of 2019. However, following his new appointment as CEO of Genting Berhad, it has been announced that he will be stepping aside from the role of CEO at Genting Plantations so he can focus on his new position. 

Tan Kong Han’s other notable roles include serving as the Managing Director of Pan Malaysian Pools Sdn Bhd; as the Administrator of the Community Chest, Malaysia; and as a director at the Asian Centre for Genomics Technology. 

His latest appointment as CEO of Genting Berhad is a notable achievement as he will be the first to hold this role outside of the conglomerate’s founding family.  

Regarding this transition, Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay – departing CEO and current Executive Chairman of Genting Berhad – commented:

He replaces me as Chief Executive Officer to lead and oversee the day-to-day operations of Genting Berhad, thus enabling me to focus on my duty as the Executive Chairman of the Board and my other duties within the Genting Group. Dato’ Sri Tan joined the company in 2007 as its President and COO, assumed the role of director in 2020, and is now stepping into the CEO role as part of a multi-year succession plan” 

Genting Berhad is an industry stalwart in the casino world, with numerous high-profile operations across the globe, including Resorts World Las Vegas. Perhaps most remarkably, the conglomerate is the holder of Malaysia’s sole casino license, which it received in 1969.
