Expertise

Suswati Basu is the Managing Editor at Gambling Insider, where she leads the publication’s global editorial strategy and oversees coverage of the international gambling industry. Her focus spans regulation, enforcement and market developments, as well as the technology and emerging trends changing how the industry operates.

Before joining Gambling Insider, Basu was Managing Editor at ReadWrite, where she led coverage across technology and iGaming. It was here that she developed a particular focus on the increasingly blurred lines between gambling, technology and finance, covering everything from prediction markets and sports betting to regulatory changes and new gambling products across international markets.

Basu has a particular interest in how regulation is evolving across the US, UK, and Europe, and what those changes mean in practice for operators, suppliers and consumers.

Before moving into iGaming, she spent seven years at AI and real-time information company Dataminr, where she headed the Europe desk and specialised in identifying breaking events, crises and major corporate developments as they unfolded. Her wider journalism career has included senior roles at NationalWorld, Channel 4 News and ITV News, as well as four years working as a journalist in China.

Her work has appeared in publications including The Guardian, The Sun and HuffPost UK.

Outside gambling journalism, Basu is the founder and host of How To Be Books, an intersectional literary platform and podcast exploring books through social, political and cultural issues. Her guests have included authors and international figures such as Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr Shirin Ebadi.

Basu studied Mandarin at SOAS, University of London, and speaks English, Mandarin, Spanish, Hindi and Bengali. Her background across international journalism, technology and real-time intelligence shapes the way she approaches the fast-moving global gambling industry.
