MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS

The start of 2023 was significant for Trustly, as the group announced several essential deals, including a partnership with Bokadirect, a Swedish booking platform for treatment and services and an agreement with APEXX to offer modernised recurring payment experiences throughout the UK and Europe.

In January 2023, the group struck a deal with Nordnet enabling pay-ins via Trustly across the Nordics and closed the acquisition of the UK-based Open Banking payments platform Ecospend. The acquisition was first announced in May 2022 and Tjärnberg described it as a ‘perfect strategic fit’.

In August 2022, the group signed a strategic partnership with Wizz Air, allowing travellers from Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden to pay for their flights from their bank accounts.

Earlier last year, Trustly expanded its footprint with the launch of Trustly Express in Finland, Netherlands, Sweden and the UK.

Also, in March 2022, Tjärnberg expressed the group’s concerns regarding the crisis in Ukraine, which is why for every transaction on its payments platform made between 16 and 23 March in Sweden, Trustly announced it would donate SEK1 ($0.096) to the Swedish Red Cross for their humanitarian efforts related to the war.

AWARDS

While under Tjärnberg’s leadership, Trustly won at the Global Gaming Awards 2023 for the best ‘Payment Solution of the Year’.

EMPLOYMENT

Tjärnberg was appointed CEO of Trustly in 2022 after serving as Chairman since 2020. In 2014, Tjärnberg founded Bambora, an international payments processor for in-store and online retailers. Following Ingenico’s acquisition of Bambora in July 2017, Tjärnberg served as Ingenico’s EVP of Small & Medium Business and, until most recently, as EVP of Retail Business.

Prior to founding Bambora, Tjärnberg served as CFO and later CEO of Point, a leading European payment services provider.

Throughout his career, he held other positions including VeriFone’s Executive VP of the Europe branch, CEO of Point Transaction Systems, and six years at PwC.

“Trustly is perfectly positioned to make digital payments seamless for everyone by connecting consumers and merchants through their bank account and I am excited to be part of the team that will continue to drive Trustly’s global expansion.” Johan Tjärnberg

Interviews and public speeches

In February 2023, Tjärnberg sat with the GI team and discussed the launch of Pay N Play in the UK, a payment solution allowing users within the UK market to make quick deposits from their bank accounts.
