FA fails to push back Kieran Trippier betting ban; suspension to end in February

England international footballer Kieran Trippier’s 10-week ban for betting breaches will stand after the Football Association (FA) failed in its bid to appeal the decision.

The ban, which started on 21 December and ends on 28 February, now applies to football in England only, meaning the Atletico Madrid defender will still be allowed to play for the La Liga leaders in Spain.

The England international, who has won 25 caps for his country, was initially suspended from all football-related activity for 10 weeks in late December, as well as being fined £70,000 ($95,473) for breaking four FA betting rules.

The FA found the former Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur right-back guilty of encouraging friends to bet on his 2019 move from Tottenham to Atletico.

However, the ban was put on hold by world governing body FIFA in early January after an appeal by Atletico, with the Spanish club contesting the FA’s right to ban a player not active in its league.

The FA lodged an appeal to change the dates of the ban but that was dismissed with a full outcome from the FIFA appeal committee to be decided in due course, with Trippier able to play until then.

Trippier missed two matches for Atletico as a result of the initial suspension but returned for the team’s 2-0 victory over Sevilla on 12 January.
