FAI betting ban won’t extend to League of Ireland clubs

The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) says its betting sponsorship ban will not be extended to League of Ireland clubs.

The announcement comes after both Shamrock Rovers and Dundalk revealed betting and gaming firms as their new sponsors, with the former signing a deal with 888 and the latter signing a deal with Bet Regal.

New FAI chief executive Jonathan Hill recently said the body would not be pursuing a betting partner for the Republic of Ireland national team, but that club matters are internal.

The Gaelic Athletic Association banned such ties with betting companies in 2018, while England’s Football Association adopted a similar stance in 2017. The issue is also currently being considered by the UK Government in its ongoing review of the 2005 Gambling Act.

Speaking ahead of the new season, League of Ireland director Mark Scanlon explained the reason behind the latest decision not to extend the ban to member clubs.

“We are quite happy with our own stance but club matters are internal,” said Scanlon. “As long as they fit within UEFA regulation and FAI regulations, we’re happy with that.

“Every sponsorship deal decision would have to go through the board. Clubs internally have to make those decisions themselves and who they want to bring on board as partners.”
