Macau records highest visitor numbers since start of pandemic

Last week Macau recoded its highest daily, and seven-day visitor totals since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Macau records highest visitor numbers since start of pandemic

Official data from the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) showed that total arrivals were 32,647 on Friday 26 March, a year-on-year increase of 1,309%.

Figures have been increasing steadily in 2021, with the latest results a continuation of this positive movement. Across the week to 26 March, 189,843 visitors entered the special administrative region, representing an average daily volume of 27,120. The two figures were a 109.5% and 77.8% increase on the Chinese New Year holiday period, and the whole of February, respectively.

Most importantly, however, this weekly figure represents the highest number of recorded visitors since before the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the MGTO.

“The figures suggest a steady upward trend in visitor arrivals recently, while a greater flow of visitors can be observed in local tourist districts,” it said in a statement.

In recent weeks there has been a concerted push from the Macau government to increase tourism in the region whilst international travel still heavily restricted.

MOP120m ($15m) is to be spent in subsidising hotel stays for local residents, whilst a tourism market campaign targeting the citizens of Hangzhou, the metropolitan capital of Zheijang province, is to be launched imminently. In doing so the MGTO is attempting to boost visitation rates from outside of its core Guangdong and Hong Kong markets.
