ITIA bans Venezuelan Roberto Maytín for 14 years

Venezuelan tennis player Roberto Maytín has been banned from the sport for 14 years after admitting breaches of the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program (TACP) rules.

tennis ban

The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) - an independent body that aims to promote, encourage, enhance and safeguard the integrity of professional tennis worldwide - served the player with the ban, as well as a fine of $100,000 (£72,500).

Maytín, who had a highest Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) doubles ranking of 86 in 2015, is now banned from playing in, coaching at, or otherwise attending any tennis event sanctioned by the governing bodies of tennis for the next 14 years.

Among the player’s offences was a breach of rules that state: “No covered person shall, directly or indirectly, contrive or attempt to contrive the outcome or any other aspect of any event,” and “no covered person shall, directly or indirectly, solicit or accept any money, benefit or consideration with the intention of negatively influencing a player’s best efforts in any event.”

The issue was handled under the 2021 TACP Proposal for Disposition framework, which allows for the ITIA to hand out a sanction to a player upon admission of guilt, without the need for a formal hearing.
