Trial of cashless gaming machines set to start in New South Wales

Wests Group's New Lambton club will become the first property in New South Wales, Australia, to trial cashless poker machines.

NSW

The trial was announced on May 24 and will be led by Aristocrat Gaming and Wests Newcastle; it aims to bring cashless payments for all club services in the area, to combat problem gambling and money laundering.

According to reports, the trial will commence from September and will include responsible gambling measures such as money limits, time limits and real-time messaging to customers.

Customer Service Minister, Victor Dominello, said the trial will “help us combat the twin sins of money laundering and problem gambling, addressing the key concerns of the Bergin Inquiry".

The Bergin Inquiry, February’s report released by former Supreme Court Judge Patricia Bergin, explored Crown Resorts' suitability to run a casino.

The report found that Crown Casino was involved in money laundering at its Melboune venue and suggested cashless gaming cards can help stop this from happening in the future.

Crown Casino is currently on trial as the company's case enters its third week of witness hearings. However, earlier this month Crown agreed to implement cashless gambling as part of a deal with the New South Wales regulator.

Aristocrat Gaming and Chief Transformation Officer, Mitchell Bowen, said: “Aristocrat believes enabling cashless payment solutions is an innovation that may help enhance the long-term sustainability and vibrancy of our industry.”

Wests Newcastle CEO, Phil Gardner, added: "A powerful new suite of responsible digital tools will empower our members.

"The ability for our members to use their own mobile wallet to pay for a meal, membership and gaming is something our industry hasn't seen before."
