Six arrested in Thailand for running illegal gambling operation

Six people in Thailand have been arrested after police raided a house in the Chawang District.

The police attended the house after receiving information that it was being used to operate a gambling den.

In addition to the illegal gambling at the site, the group had also broken the local Covid-19 gathering ban.

Local reports show Covid-19 was spreading across the province, particularly at gambling venues like these.

The reports also indicated that once seeing the police, the group tried to feel through the back door but all six failed and were caught and arrested.

Several possessions were seized from the house, such as gambling cards and cash.

The group has now been charged with colluding in gambling and illegal gathering during a pandemic, which violates the Communicable Disease Control Act.

In Chawang District, 49 new cases were reported on Tuesday, which raised the total infection rate to 1,167.

Out of the cases, 850 people have recovered and another 299 are currently in hospitals.

Chief of the Provincial Public Health Office, Dr Jarasphong Sukkree, said he had not given orders for the police to tackle illegal gambling in the area, which is reporting high numbers of virus infections.

He said that related authorities such as the Governor, health officials and the police were already on the communicable disease control committee and were able to break down the illegal gambling operation.
