Hospitality venues in Sydney will be visited by regulatory officials to ensure businesses are complying with Covid-19 Public Health Orders.

Inspectors from Liquor and Gaming NSW, Safework NSW and NSW Fair Trading will check on businesses across Sydney.

Compliance Liquor and Gaming NSW Acting Director, Darren Duke, said inspectors will start with Bondi and surrounding areas from today.

Duke said: “It is critically important that all people visiting hospitality venues must remember to check-in using the Service NSW QR Code.

“The Covid-Safe requirements are in place for an important reason, and all venues need to make sure they are fully compliant.”

In total, there will be 40 inspectors assessing venues across Sydney; they will examine whether the property has Covid safety plans, are following the check-in process and making sure they enforce social distancing and the wearing of masks.

Duke added: “Venues not complying with the Public Health Orders pose a clear and significant risk to public health and any venues found breaching the rules may be subject to a fine or in serious cases could face a closure of their venue.”

The latest public health order specifies that staff at hospitality venues in Greater Sydney must wear a mask indoors and that there must be social distancing of one person per four square metres.

Visitors are also required to remain seated while drinking and must not engage in singing or dancing.

Over the last two months, Liquor and Gaming NSW has carried out more than 200 inspections; in this time, it has issued 14 fines worth AU$40,000 (US$30,000) in total.

The authorities encourage people to report any breaches of Covid safety protocol.
