Three more Australian casinos close amid Covid-19 outbreak

Three Queensland casinos have been forced to suspend their operations from Tuesday evening due to another circuit breaker lockdown.

The decision from the Queensland Government comes after two new cases of Covid-19 were detected in the community, with 11 local government areas now undergoing a three-day lockdown.

Among those areas is Brisbane City Council, which is home to Treasury Brisbane, Gold Coast City Council, which is home to The Star Gold Coast, and Townsville City Council, where The Ville Resort-casino is based.

Closures of The Star Gold Coast and Treasury Brisbane now mean that all three of The Star Entertainment Group’s properties are closed, after the group suspended operations at The Star Sydney for two weeks on 25 June.

A statement from the operator read: “Further to The Star’s ASX Announcement made on 25 June 2021, The Star advises that, pursuant to Public Health (Covid-19 Temporary Movement and Gathering Restrictions) Order, 2021, operations at The Star Sydney will remain closed until at least 11:59pm on 9 July 2021 (apart from limited hotel facilities).

The operator added that it will continue to pay staff during this stay-at-home period.

The circuit breaker lockdown is designed to allow contact tracers time to identify anyone who has been potentially exposed to the virus before it can be transmitted to others.
