Australia-based sportsbook operator PointsBet has launched its sports betting product in West Virginia, following regulatory approval from the West Virginia Lottery Commission.

West Virginia is the seventh state where PointsBet is live for online sports betting.

The operator has previously launched in the New Jersey, Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, Colorado and Michigan sports betting markets. PointsBet also operates iGaming in New Jersey and Michigan.

The company gained access to the state's market through an agreement with Penn National Gaming, announced in July 2019.

"Launching in West Virginia represents further progress for PointsBet and presents another tremendous opportunity we are excited to attack," said Johnny Aitken, CEO of PointsBet USA.

“As always, PointsBet will provide this passionate, sports-loving community with a fast and reliable online sports betting product across every customer touchpoint.

”We are thrilled to now introduce West Virginian sports bettors to the competitive advantages PointsBet possesses in owning our technology end-to-end, such as our speed and ease of use as well as a deep slate of betting options for every NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, WNBA, and PGA Tour contest.”

PointsBet additionally revealed plans to launch an online casino product for West Virginia gambling by the end of 2021, subject to receiving the necessary licence and approval from the state.

The operator also announced the appointment of Aonghus Mulvihill as Vice President of Global Sportsbook Trading.

As part of his role at PointsBet, Mulvihill will oversee PointsBet’s global team of analysts in various sport, while designing and implementing the company’s trading risk management strategy.

Mulvihill joins the company after a spell at Betfair International Sports, where he served as Commercial Director. Previously, he served as a Director of Corporate Strategy at Flutter Group, as well as Head of Performance, Proposition & Trading at Betfair Exchange, and Head of Trading Risk at Paddy Power.

"Having watched PointsBet's incredible expansion, including the recent acquisition of Banach Technology in Ireland, I'm absolutely thrilled to join the leadership team for a truly unique company that is putting technology first, and delivering an unparalleled experience for customers around the world," Mulvihill commented.
