Casino Oceanus opens after 4-day lockdown

Casino Oceanus, a self-promoted venue of gaming operator SJM Holdings Ltd, resumed work on Saturday after a 4-day shutdown due to the growing number of Covid-19 cases in Macau.

The venue suspended operations last week as it was discovered one of the patrons visiting Casino Oceanus was tested positive for Covid-19, reported GGRAsia. The venue used the temporary shutdown to clean the premises, and the visitors were directed to another nearby casino, Casino Jai Alai, which is also under the licence of SJM Holdings.

Casino Oceanus reopened its doors after “thorough cleaning and disinfection and upon inspection by the Macau Health Bureau,” said SJM Holdings. The operator assured the casino “strictly adheres to the pandemic prevention and control measures of the Macau SAR Government to ensure a safe and hygienic environment, safeguarding the health and safety of employees, guests and the entire Macau community.”

The resumption of work in the casino might be a step towards further recovery for Macau as the city suffered a dip in revenues at the beginning of October, just when the Golden Week holiday started.

JP Morgan Securities noted that for 1-10 October, Macau’s GGR reached MOP1.25bn ($156m), only 10% of pre-pandemic Golden Week numbers. New cases of Covid-19 were discovered in the city and the travel to and from Macau faced strict regulations and quarantines, which reduced average daily visitors by about 94%.

The analysts added that despite the lack of visitors, those who did travel to Macau for the holiday spent an average of $13,000 per visitor, which is “above the normal average spend for premium mass players.”
