$1.3bn: New Jersey sportsbook handle smashes all records for October

New Jersey’s online and retail sportsbooks have set another record by handling $1.3bn in wagers for October.

On top of that, New Jersey along with Pennsylvania became the first states to generate $1bn in annual gross revenue from online casino and poker.

The state’s betting volume was up 62% from the $803.1m generated for October 2020 and surpassed September’s record (of $1.01bn) by 29%.

Football betting generated $499m, while basketball betting poured $156.9m through sportsbooks.

Eric Ramsey, Analyst for PlayUSA, said: “With so much to bet on in October, state records for wagering are falling in every major legal sport betting market in the US.

"New Jersey separates itself because bettor enthusiasm for the NBA outstrips almost every other market, which pushes its ceiling during a month like October, to heights that were once unreachable in the US.”

Mobile sportsbooks again accounted for a high percentage, with 90% of the state’s handle for October. FanDuel led the online market with $39.6m in gross revenue, DraftKings followed with $15.9m and BetMGM came in third with $7.8m.

Retail sportsbooks set a record too, with $124.2m in wagers for October, showing a 34% increase from the previous month. The retail market was led by FanDuel with $4.5m in revenue.

Ramsey continued: “More than just a growing base of bettors, online sportsbooks are expanding their reach with in-game betting and prop bets. The result is that bettors are placing more wagers as they become more comfortable with that kind of action.”
