Representatives from Rush Street Gaming, including Co-founder and CEO Greg Carlin, attended the ground-breaking ceremony for the over $300m gaming and entertainment complex planned for Victory Boulevard.
When it opens in early 2023, the venue will feature a casino, BetRivers sportsbook, restaurants, a live entertainment lounge, hotel and event centre.
“Today marks a significant milestone for Rush Street Gaming and for the Commonwealth of Virginia,” commented Carlin. “We’re excited to expand our Rivers Casino brand family and help launch the state’s casino industry right here in the City of Portsmouth.”
Its new location will be the seventh “up-ground development” for the Rivers Casino brand and its first in Virginia, joining properties in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New York.
According to Rush Street, the casino will bring an estimated 1,300 permanent jobs and approximately 1,400 construction jobs to the area. Moreover, the venue is expected to generate $16.3m in new annual tax revenue for the City of Portsmouth.
Mayor Shannon Glover was also in attendance, alongside other local and state officials, to inaugurate the construction of Rush Street’s latest casino.
“This is truly an exciting time for the citizens of Portsmouth — particularly as it relates to job growth and the overall economic vitality of our great city,” remarked Glover.
“We are pleased to also create new business opportunities and introduce an entirely new industry to Portsmouth. We remain confident that this project will enhance the vibrancy of our community.”
