Translating to “Music Aid” in English, Musikhjälpen is an annual radio and television campaign that, each year, aims to raise money for a specific cause.
For 144 hours, three well-known Swedish TV and radio hosts are locked in a glass cage to broadcast non-stop while people can call in, request songs and donate money.
Last year’s theme was “no human should be left without hospital care”, and during the six-day broadcasting marathon, Musikhjälpen 2020 generated SEK 48m ($5.3m).
Hajper and Persson are looking to do their bit this year as the campaign turns its attention to children’s welfare.
“For a world without child labour” is 2021’s cause, and this year’s proceeds will go towards ensuring that young people are able to grow up safely.
The broadcast will take place between 13 and 19 December and any funds raised will be used to improve education and schooling, but also to influence governments in countries where child labour is an especially pernicious problem.
To help out, Hajper and Persson will hold an event at Ultimate Padel in Upplands Väsby, Stockholm on 17 December, where they will be joined by 32 well-known faces who will take part in a livestreamed Padel tournament.
Padel is a racquet sport similar to tennis, but played on a smaller, walled court and with solid, stringless bats.
Hajper has pledged to double all individual donations made by viewers during the livestream, up to SEK 500,000, which if reached, would see it donate SEK 1m in total.
