After opening its first US sportsbook in New Jersey in 2019, theScore Bet then went on to offer its services in Colorado, Iowa and Indiana.

However, the company has now alerted customers that, as of 1 July, it will cease to operate in the US but will still offer services to its Ontario customers.

The main reason for this could be its takeover by Penn National Gaming in 2021. Penn National already has a strong US brand, while theScore is more popular in its native Canada.

In an FAQ on its website, theScore Bet clarified it will stop accepting all US-based deposits and wagers on 15 June, and from that date until 1 July US customers will only have the option to withdraw funds from their accounts.

The FAQ went on to discuss outstanding bets, stating that all bets set to be completed on or before 1 July will be settled as normal. However, customers who have bets that will be completed after this date will need to wait to hear directly from theScore Bet, and will be given further details at that time.

Elsewhere, Penn National also owns Barstool Sportsbook, and theScore's statement confirmed that US customers in 12 states, including New Jersey, Colorado, Iowa and Indiana, would still have access to the full services of Barstool.

This decision to cease US operations comes after theScore Bet seemingly struggled to make a significant market impact. It held less than 1% market share in an April report on Indiana sports betting, and the same month in Iowa saw a 5.1% market share for theScore Bet and Barstool combined.
