Royal Ascot 2022 review: £168m World Pool turnover, also growth for SBK

Royal Ascot 2022 continued to break records over its five-day duration, culminating in a £168m ($205.8m) gross turnover for World Pool bets.

This represented a 35% from 2021’s turnover of £123.9m, a figure that last year also included non-World Pool pool bets.

The Coronation Stakes, Platinum Jubilee Stakes and the Gold Cup were the three biggest pools of the week, with totals of £6.6m, £6.4m and £6.1m respectively. The Coronation Stakes has now overtaken the Cazoo Derby as the UK’s biggest ever World Pool race.

Hong Kong Jockey Club CEO Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges said: “Royal Ascot once again produced exceptional racing which was reflected in numerous World Pool turnover records. It is clear that international racing fans have embraced the quality and depth of fields across the five days.”

“It has been another hugely successful week for World Pool at Royal Ascot and we are thrilled with the level of turnover both on course as we welcomed back a full-scale crowd and remotely,” added Ascot Racecourse CE Guy Henderson.

“In my time at Ascot, the World Pool has been one of the most innovative initiatives we have been involved in, and these new partnerships have proved hugely beneficial to racing at Ascot and the wider industry."

This year’s Royal Ascot saw the event return to full-capacity crowds for the first time in three years, and Business Day advised UK bookmakers to expect an “avalanche of accumulator bets”.

This prediction appeared to have been accurate, with sportsbook app SBK (from operator Smarkets) reporting a 169% rise in active users compared to the previous year, and a 181% rise in Royal Ascot bets on the app.
