Macau Government sets minimum revenue threshold for casinos

Casinos in Macau have been set a new minimum revenue threshold at an “easy-to-reach” level in a bid to bring relief to the region amid Covid-19 restrictions and regulatory changes, as reported by Bloomberg.

Authorised gaming companies in the gambling hub are required to generate a minimum of MOP$7m (US$870,000) per table, and MOP$300,000 per machine. It takes the total revenue threshold to MOP$45.6bn, similar to 2022 levels.

Firms in Macau are permitted to operate as many as 6,000 tables and 12,000 machines in total for 2023, as stated by the Macau Government.

It’s the first time authorities have set a formal cap on table numbers and a minimum income requirement, with the Government aiming to tighten control of casino operators.

Crown Sydney CEO Simon McGrath to step down in September

Crown Sydney Chief Executive Simon McGrath will resign next month, according to Australian media reports.

The casino boss and group head of hospitality will step down in September, Crown confirmed, after his appointment was announced late last year.

Crown Resorts' new owner, Blackstone, will reveal his replacement “soon.” The company’s chosen candidate will, according to the Australian Financial Review, likely come from Macau.

“The pandemic has been a watershed moment for the gaming and hospitality industries. There is a huge acceleration of digitalisation in the industry; including personalisation and changing consumer behaviour” Chin Kuan Tan, Senior Director of Solutions and Value Engineering

Importing another executive from the Asian gambling hub would align with Crown Resorts’ recent appointment of Ciarán Carruthers as CEO. Prior to joining the company, he served as COO at Wynn Macau.

Meanwhile, McGrath’s other role as group head of hospitality will reportedly go unfilled as Blackstone looks to shake up Crown Resorts.

Genting Malaysia reports $486.9m in revenue for Q2

Genting Malaysia has published its H1 2022 results while detailing the company’s Q2 2022 financial performance.

Revenue for the quarter amounted to RM 2.18bn ($486.9m), representing a significant increase of more than double last year’s total of RM 817.9m.

Revenue for H1 totalled RM 3.90bn, rising from H1 2021’s RM 1.44bn.

These impressive revenue figures can be attributed to a boost given to Malaysian leisure and hospitality businesses following the easing of pandemic-related restrictions.

Paradise Entertainment sees H1 revenue fall 30%

Paradise Entertainment has reported H1 2022 total revenue of HK$181.1m (US$23.1m), representing a 30% fall year-on-year.

The company attributes this disappointing result to a fall in revenue from the provision of casino management services in Macau, as well as a dip in sales, and leasing of electronic gaming equipment and systems in the region.
