Asia round-up: Entain's Australian tech aim and MGM Resorts's three-year wait

Entain Sustain: Tech in gaming

asia round up new south wales entain

Speaking from Entain Sustain, Entain Australia's Director of Innovation and Operations, Liz Hiteshue, speaks about the initiatives that will continue the growth of technical innovations at the company, such as Entain's Connectathon event in Australia.

Hiteshue said: "To get ahead in the future is to have a clear business strategy with a technological future. Today, tech represents a connected ecosystem of products, all part of a global landscape featuring businesses that are embracing the same mindset."

Hiteshue continued by commenting on the importance of data in the gaming industry for driving continued growth, saying that 90% of the world's data was produced in the last two years alone.

Entain's Connectathon brought together Australians from diverse backgrounds, to make tech-based products that promote typically underrepresented groups.

Hiteshue says the Connectathon, a form of hackathon event, not only aimed to give a voice to diversity but was an industry drive to local collaboration.

Hackathons are sprint-like design events in which teams must collaborate to produce software projects.

This community event, held in Brisbane, came as part of the £100m ($112.5m) investment to forge local partnerships in markets where Entain operates.

The operator has undertaken similar social responsibility initiatives in the US, UK, Greece and most recently in Baltic states.

Approval of MGM Resorts' Osaka IR warned of three-year delay

MP for the Japan Innovation Party Taku Ikeshita has warned that construction of the Osaka IR, slated to be MGM Resorts’ flagship casino destination in Japan, could be delayed if government approval is not granted by March 2023.

Ikeshita said: “The Osaka IR schedule could be delayed by one to three years if government approval is delayed.

“Please show us when the approval will be given and how the Prime Minister recognises the importance of IR... the approval [needs to happen] by March 2023 at the latest.”

MGM Resorts has previously said it expects Japan’s national Government to give its verdict on the Osaka IR this autumn.

The project led by MGM Resorts has a proposed cost of JPY1.08trn ($7.2bn), and although Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida didn’t comment specifically on the timescale for approval, he said the Government was “going ahead with the IR procedures properly.”

NSW clubs and pubs to expand use of facial recognition tech

Hospitality destinations in New South Wales, including pubs and clubs, will expand their use of facial recognition technology in gaming areas from 2023.

The technology is used to identify excluded gamblers and is currently at the end stage of development.

Technology development is being managed by the Australian Hotels Association NSW and ClubsNSW, who plan to have everyone entering gaming spaces scanned by next year.

ClubsNSW CEO Josh Landis said: “Close to 100 clubs are already using this technology and the feedback is that it works.

“Clubs have a demonstrated commitment to protecting their members and patrons from gambling harm and this technology will take the world-leading Multi-Venue Self-Exclusion program to the next level.”
