GambleAware has launched its new Lived Experience Council (LEC), which aims to play a ‘pivotal role in shaping its short and long-term future plans.’

The LIC, which met for its first session on 2 December 2022, is composed entirely of people with lived experience of gambling harms. This includes people who have been affected by other people’s gambling.

During last week’s meeting, the LIC elected a new Chair. The Council currently comprises 10 members, with the term of office lasting two years, with that term able to be renewed once.

The LIC aims to build on GambleAware’s commitment to ensuring its approach is collaborative and best placed to support the communities most in need.

Council members include Chair Ben Howard, David Quinti, Leanne Downie, Mark Conway, Nicola Jaques, Sam Starsmore, Steph Shilton, Suhayl Patel, Jas Bindarh and an unnamed member.

“Our new Council is further evidence of our proud commitment to engage with the gambling harms community,” said GambleAware Chief Executive Zoë Osmond.

“With the imminent publication of the White Paper, and subsequent regulatory reform, this is a crucial time for GambleAware’s strategic development. It’s imperative that the voices of those with experience and expertise in this public health crisis guide our future path.

“My heartfelt thanks to our new Council members, and we look forward to working with you all on our mission to prevent and tackle gambling harms.”

Last month, GambleAware released a new report which found that people suffering from problem gambling can vastly improve their condition after only six appointments with the National Gambling Treatment Service (NGTS).

Even after the initial six sessions, 77% of people continued to make improvements with their addiction – and 56% showed a significant improvement in their general well-being – following the completion of treatment.
