During the tournament, England’s five games saw payment levels among the highest of any team – with England vs France generating 11,000 payments per minute (PPM) at its peak ahead of kick-off.

Pubs in the UK also saw a 200% increase in payments during the Qatar World Cup, with 600,000 payments processed – compared to a typical Saturday evening.

The weekend evening games proved to be the busiest for betting transactions. At the same time, the final featuring France vs Argentina was the most bet-on match in the tournament – peaking at 11,500 PPM, with £2.8m payments processed alongside a total authorised value of over £50m.

The data also revealed that a combined total of 67.8 million payments were processed for FIS’ (FIS is Worldpay's parent company) top gambling merchants on match days, a 30% increase compared to the 2020 Euros.

Alex Morgan-Moodie, Director of Verticals at WorldPay, commented on the data: “With the football season showing no let-up and returning for the hectic domestic festive season fixture calendar, pub and gaming merchants will be hoping for the next few weeks to be just as busy.

“And to help them capitalise on this busy period, it’s now increasingly important for operators to invest in a smooth payments journey which can act as the differentiator to providing the best user experience.”

Recently, data from GeoComply showed that the World Cup final was the second-most popular sports match of the year for US bettors.
