On 4 April 2022, Ontario was the first province in Canada to regulate online gambling and sports betting.

During this first year of operations, the residents of Ontario placed around CA$35.6bn (US$26.4bn) in total wagers, excluding any promotional wagers, across the 40+ operators live in the province.

This accumulated to total gaming revenue of CA$1.4bn, which would place Ontario in the top five iGaming jurisdictions in North America.

George Sweny, VP, Regulatory Affairs at Flutter International, said: “At Flutter, we are so proud of Ontario’s success in establishing a regulated and competitive iGaming market over the past year.

“We invested in growing our local Canadian team to launch a full range of both FanDuel and PokerStars’ safe and trusted products as registered operators in the province, allowing Ontario sports fans and Casino players to engage responsibly.”

Out of the 1.6 million active player accounts, the average spend per player was around CA$70 a month.

In the casino iGaming market, slots took 48% of all wagers and 32% were placed on table games with live dealers.

Basketball proved to be the most popular in the sports betting market, taking 28% of all betting wagers.

Despite ice hockey being the official winter sport of Canada, only 9% of wagers were placed on the sport.

Football and American football proved to be more in demand, with 15% and 14% of sports wagers being made on them, respectively.
