Gcore, a European-based provider of high-performance, low-latency cloud and edge solutions, has claimed it recently stopped a large Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack against a major European gaming company.

Although Gcore can’t reveal the particular company, it has a number of partners including Wargaming, Saber Interactive, Bandai Namco and Nitrado.

Initially, the attackers targeted the company’s application layer through a network of botnets and amplification techniques.

Once this didn’t work, they began a DDoS attack of 500 million packets per second (PPS) with a total capacity of more than 800 gigabits per second (Gbps).

For comparison, the average JPG or PDF file will consist of 10kB, and 800 Gigabits translates to around 1.1 million kB.

Andre Reitenbach, CEO of Gcore, commented: "By disrupting online gaming services, DDoS attacks can frustrate players and cause huge reputational harm to gaming companies.

“The impact on revenue is also severe, with an hour of downtime costing gaming companies between $25,000 and $40,000 on average.

“We are therefore delighted to have been able to stop this attack in its tracks — a result that pays testament to the security and resilience of Gcore's cloud infrastructure."

By spreading this traffic across multiple locations throughout its infrastructure, Gcore was able to negate the impact of the attack and prevented the client from receiving any disruptance.

Reitenbach continued: "This case highlights the importance of having a robust DDoS protection strategy to ensure the availability and resilience of online services.

“It is crucial for companies to prioritise DDoS protection and work closely with trusted security partners to identify and mitigate potential threats."

In other industry news, Entain has announced it will acquire STS for £750m ($952.2m).
