After a 16-month investigation, the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation (OLGR) in Brisbane has cleared Chow Tai Fook Enterprises (CTFE) of any suitability issues regarding its stakes in The Star Entertainment Group and the Queen’s Wharf Brisbane development.
The investigation was initiated following media reports suggesting links between CTFE and Asian-based junkets, including Suncity Group and its incarcerated CEO, Alvin Chau.
CTFE, chaired by Henry Cheng, holds a significant stake in various ventures, including the Star Entertainment Group and the Queen’s Wharf Brisbane development.
The investigation, concluded in February 2024, involved extensive scrutiny, including interviews with CTFE senior management, formal and informal discussions with various parties and a review of financial records. The findings indicate that there is insufficient evidence to deem CTFE unsuitable for its investments.
Furthermore, the Attorney-General's office clarified that an external private firm, engaged to assist in the investigation, reviewed OLGR's initial suitability inquiry conducted in 2015, affirming its thoroughness and reasonable findings.
As the Queen’s Wharf and The Star Brisbane casino launch approaches in August, stakeholders will closely monitor developments in both CTFE's and Star Entertainment Group's operations.
