Malaysia Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reiterated that there will not be a second casino in Malaysia.

"Affirmative no! Malaysia does not have to venture into the second casino business. We are focusing on digital transformation, energy transition and AI, and we believe these are among the industries that adequately push the country forward.”

He was quoted telling moderator Haslinda Amin in a plenary session during the Qatar Economic Forum (QEF) 2024, as reported by Bernama.

The Fourth Edition QEF forum participation is part of Anwar’s three-day official visit to Qatar starting from 12 May to 14 May 2024. The visit was an invitation by the Amir of the State of Qatar His Highness Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani.

Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, reiterates that with the above-mentioned sectors to spur economic growth.

Currently, Malaysia only has one casino licence, issued to Genting in 1969.

Last month, the Prime Minister has repeatedly denied allegations of discussing a possible second casino in Johor’s Forest City.

Genting and Berjaya, the two groups allegedly involved in the discussion, have also published official statements to refute the allegations, with Berjaya threatening to take legal action against the rumours.
