In the midst of rising summer temperatures, SJM has taken the initiative to provide cooling measures for its employees, especially those working outdoors.
The move aligns with recent requests from lawmakers such as Lawmaker Leong Sun Iok and unions such as the Macau Federation of Trade Unions. Both were concerned about the mental and physical health of workers in the gaming industries and have urged the Macau government and its big concessionaires to “promote the social responsibility of gaming companies in protecting employees” and be “more considerate of their workforce.”
In alignment with guidelines from Macau’s Labour Affairs Bureau, SJM has implemented several cooling and safety measures for its outdoor staff.
According to Macau news media, these measures included portable fans, sunshade equipment, cooling sleeves and heat-resistant clothing for employees stationed at SJM’s outdoor shuttle bus stops; supplying water and energy drinks for employees; and sending reminders to their employees to take precautions against heat stroke.
Reasonable shift rotations were also implemented to allow for adequate rest among its workforce, to minimise the risk of heat exhaustion.
SJM’s employees responded that the initiatives help them stay comfortable and safe on the job in the extreme heat. They were grateful for SJM’s efforts in taking care of its employees’ physical and mental health.
