Macau’s Labour Bureau (DSAL) has noted that the percentage of local workers in mid and senior-level positions at Macau’s six gaming concessionaires reached 90.35% in the first half of the year.
According to Macau news media, the findings from the DSAL included the numbers from Macau’s ‘Big Six’ concessionaires: Sands China, Galaxy Entertainment, Wynn Macau, MGM China, Melco Resorts and SJM Holdings. The total number of employees from all the operators amounted to 27,140 non-residents and 76,225 locals.
The bureau said the Government had been maintaining the proportion of local workers in middle and senior management of the six tourism and leisure companies at no less than 85%, with the numbers rising to 90.3% recently.
It also stated that hiring non-resident workers was necessary “for the development of the MSAR as a world centre of tourism and leisure and the needs of the socio-economic development of Macau.”
The statement was made in response to lawmaker Song Pek Kei, who warned that “the employment of local workers is not adequately safeguarded” despite reassurance from the Government.
The DSAL added that it would “rigorously monitor” the approval of non-resident worker permits and “continuously review and improve the verification and approval process.”
This would be in line with the recent updates from Macau’s gaming and gambling industry, with employees seeing a rise in salaries shortly after lawmakers urged for better welfare for gaming sector employees, especially Macau’s ‘Big Six’ operators.
In another article, the National Director of Macau Special Olympics believed that Macau’s ‘Big Six’ had played an important role as employers of people with disabilities.
