Key points:

- Danish gambling spend increased by 4.3% in August 2024, reaching DKK 571m

- This increase was largely driven by growth in online casino activity

- Poker now appears as a separate category in monthly statistics, offering more detailed insights into online casino market composition

Recent data from the Danish Gambling Authority reveals a notable increase in overall gambling expenditure for August 2024.

The total spending across various gambling sectors – including betting, online casino, gaming machines and land-based casinos – reached DKK 571m ($84m), marking a 4.3% rise compared to the same month in 2023. This growth is primarily attributed to an uptick in online casino spending.

Interestingly, other sectors such as betting, gaming machines and land-based casinos experienced a decline in the same period, highlighting the shifting preferences of Danish gamblers towards online platforms.

In addition to this new data, the Danish authority has also introduced changes to its reporting structure.

Poker now appears as a separate category under online casino in the monthly statistics. This modification, applied retroactively to data since 2012, intends to offer a more detailed view of the online casino market without altering the overall gross gaming revenue (GGR) figures.

The restructuring has led to the removal of the "commission games" category, with non-poker commission games now falling under the "other" category.

Consequently, the online casino sector is now subdivided into six distinct game types: gaming machines, roulette, blackjack, poker, bingo and other.

In related news, in July of this year, Danish authorities formed an agreement to tackle illegal gambling marketing. This update sees the Danish Consumer Ombudsman, the Gambling Advertising Board and the Danish Gambling Authority striking a deal that aims to streamline efforts and prevent duplication of work when dealing with violations by gambling companies.
