Key points:

- New York State has posted monthly wagering handle of $2.48bn for January

- This figure has shattered the nation’s previous monthly wagering handle

- January 2025 GGR has also risen year-on-year to a total of $247m

- Fiscal year-to-date handle and GGR have already matched figures from the full fiscal year 2023/24

The New York State Gaming Commission has posted its first monthly wagering handle figure of the year, unveiling a record-breaking $2.48bn sports betting handle for the month of January.

Monthly handle

Indeed, this latest result outpaces the previous record monthly wagering handle of $2.32bn, also achieved in New York last October, and marks the fifth month in a row that the state has posted a handle in excess of $2bn.

Further, these latest figures bring the total handle for the fiscal year-to-date in New York State – which runs from April 2024 to March 2025 – up to a total of $19.5bn. Contextually, the total figure achieved during the previous fiscal year 2023/24 was $19.8bn - a figure that has all but been surpassed with two months of the current fiscal year still to go.

Year-on-year, January 2025’s wagering handle has risen by a healthy 23.9%, further increasing by almost exactly $200m from the $2.28bn posted in December 2024.

Monthly GGR

Regarding monthly gross gaming revenue (GGR), the New York State Gaming Commission has posted a figure of $247m for the month of January. This represents a rise of 15.7% year-on-year, alongside an increase of 48.9% month-on-month.

Interestingly, when compared to the previous record-breaking handle month of October 2024, GGR only amounted to $176m – a figure that was eclipsed by a figure of $231m during the month of November 2024. Nevertheless, this latest revenue figure remains the highest to be posted by New York State to date.

Overall, the latest GGR update to the fiscal year calendar brings the year-to-date total up to $1.8bn overall, a figure which – once again – matches the total amount achieved during the full previous fiscal year 2023/24 with two months still to go.

Leading operators

FanDuel has started the calendar year strong in the state of New York, posting a sports betting handle of $965m – its highest monthly of the fiscal year-to-date. This was paired with its highest GGR figure of the fiscal year so far, $111.3m, which brings its total revenue for the fiscal year up to $817.8m.

In recent company news, FanDuel announced the strong adoption of its new responsible gambling tool last week.

FanDuel was closely trailed by DraftKings Sportsbook in the state during January, as the rival operator posted a wagering handle of $837.9m - paired with a revenue figure of $81.98m. Last week, DraftKings announced that it would operating a new sportsbook location at the Live! Casino & Hotel Louisiana development in Bossier City.
