Key points:
- The Kaizen Foundation is partnering with Friends of the Earth Malta on a three-year project to restore Il-Forn ta’ Kemmuna as an environmental education hub
- The restored site will incorporate sustainable technologies and host educational activities promoting conservation and Maltese heritage
- Comino, a Natura 2000 site, is home to unique flora and fauna, making the project significant for environmental preservation
The Kaizen Foundation has announced a three-year partnership with Friends of the Earth Malta (FoEM) to support the creation of an environmental education hub on Comino, a small island in the Maltese archipelago.
The partnership will contribute to the restoration of Il-Forn ta’ Kemmuna, a historic bakery that once served Comino’s small farming community.
The building will be transformed into a zero-impact facility aimed at educating visitors about the island’s unique ecology and historical significance.
The project will incorporate sustainable technologies such as renewable energy, rainwater harvesting and waste management systems.
Commenting on the collaboration, Panos Konstantopoulos, President of the Kaizen Foundation, stated: “This new partnership with Friends of the Earth Malta aligns perfectly with our mission to support long-term, impactful initiatives that improve quality of life.
"The environment is one of the core pillars of our Foundation and this project on Comino Island promotes both environmental awareness and conservation.
“Cooperating with NGOs like FoEM, as well as with local communities is key for bringing about meaningful change and expanding the impact of our support.”
Good to know: Il-Forn ta’ Kemmuna was originally conceptualised by FoEM’s director, Martin Galea De Giovanni, who saw the bakery’s potential while camping on the island
The initiative seeks to reconnect visitors and local communities with Comino’s protected landscape, designated as a Natura 2000 site, the highest level of environmental protection in the EU.
The restored site will offer educational activities such as guided nature walks, permaculture workshops and traditional Maltese bread-making, aiming to strike a balance between conservation and cultural heritage.
