Key points:
- Casino Cosmopol in Stockholm will remain open until at least 1 January 2026, pending a change in ownership instructions
- The Swedish Government’s decision to close land-based casinos is set to affect the property, with closure likely after the Riksdag’s approval of a new law
The Riksdag has passed a new law that will lead to the closure of land-based casinos such as Casino Cosmopol. The casino, located in Stockholm, will remain open until the law takes effect on 1 January 2026, or until further Government ownership instructions are issued.
Casino Cosmopol, which is governed as a monopoly under Svenska Spel, has been experiencing a decline in both profitability and visitor numbers. This has also had an impact on several of Sweden’s other land-based casinos. The casino in Sundsvall closed in 2020 and in 2024, operations in Gothenburg and Malmö were also halted.
The next step involves a change in ownership instructions to begin the process of closing Casino Cosmopol in Stockholm. The issue of ownership instructions will be discussed at Svenska Spel’s annual general meeting on 24 April 2025.
Following this meeting, further details regarding closure will be provided. There will also be a focus on the working lives of employees after this closure.
Good to know: Casino Cosmopol employs around 240 staff and operations are governed by Swedish state-owned Svenska Spel, with ownership instructions being reviewed on 24 April 2025
Svenska Spel also confirmed that it will begin the sales process for the K-labeled property located at Kungsgatan 65 in Stockholm.
