Key points:
- Spelinspektionen reported no increases in turnover in the majority of its segments
- Online casino and betting, state lottery and cash machine games were all down
- Games for public benefit and land-based gambling remained steady
Spelinspektionen, the Swedish Gambling Authority, has reported its Q1 results for the first fiscal quarter of the year.
The total turnover for licensed casinos during this period was SEK 6.61bn ($688.94m), a 1% drop year-on-year.
The largest segment was still online casino and betting, which brought in SEK 4.28bn in turnover, which represents a rather steady albeit 0.2% decline.
State lottery and cash machine games fell 3% to SEK 1.3bn, although unsurprisingly, the largest decline was with Casino Cosmopol - which saw a 60% decrease to SEK 26m.
Good to know: Svenska Spel closed its last Casino Cosmopol venue a few weeks ago, marking the end of an era
Casino Cosmopol would regularly bring in around SEK 245m before the pandemic, but the numbers never recovered and the turnover would linger around SEK 145m before slowly winding down throughout 2024.
Interestingly, gambling for public purposes such as lotteries increased this quarter, rising 3.5% to SEK 886m.
Games for public benefit, such as hall bingo, remained steady with no change at SEK 49m, as did land-based gambling at SEK 52m.
While this report does only cover licensed operators, the ATG has revealed that unlicensed gambling sites continue to capture a significant portion of the Swedish market.
