Key points:
- Operator bet365 has paid out £16.3m on its Sub On Play On feature during the Nation’s League Semi-Final
- The large winnings have been attributed to the fact the match was a high-scoring game, with numerous opportunities for betbuilding
Operator bet365 has confirmed a £16.3m ($22.2m) payout from its Sub On Play On feature during the Nation’s League Semi-Final between Spain and France.
Indeed, Spain were not the only ones to emerge victorious from the affair, as a number of players wagering on the match with bet365 players were beneficiaries of a record payout from the operator. The bet365 feature which led to such a large pay out – Sub On Play On – allows bettors to transfer their existing bet on a given player onto whoever that player gets substituted for.
The idea behind the feature is to allow players to extend their bet builders – however, in a game as high scoring as the Nation’s League Semi-Final (which finished 5-4) the initiative can, evidently, lead to high payouts.
Commenting on the development, bet365 PR spokesperson, Steve Freeth, said: “Clearly, a game with nine goals and seventeen shots on target was going to be extremely painful on the Bet Builder front, especially with the subs replacing high-profile players who hadn’t contributed.
“One of the biggest swings for Bet Builder backers was the introduction of Samu Omorodion who replaced Mikel Oyarzabal with the substitute managing what the Real Sociedad striker couldn’t – a shot on target, although he did manage two assists during the 77 minutes.
“We also had Dani Vivian coming on for Robin Le Normand and committing a foul with Fabian Ruiz replacing Pedri and doing likewise. Throw in goals, shots on target and assists from players like Kylian Mbappe, Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams and you get a monster payout that hopefully doesn’t happen very often!”
