OPAP sees Greek online sports betting license revoked

OPAP has reportedly had its online sports betting license in Greece revoked.

According to Greek media outlets, the gaming firm is still permitted to offer retail operations within the market but has been forced to cease its digital sports wagering services.

Previously a state-run monopoly in Greece, the decision to strip OPAP’s license was originally taken in July but not made public until now.

OPAP was deemed to have operated illegally since 2011 after an initial legal challenge from Austrian operator Goalbet.

The basis for the claim against the company was that it did not undergo as strict a licensing procedure as its competitors.

Consequently, 24 operators adjuged to have acted within the law can now file for compensation against OPAP.

Gambling Insider has contacted OPAP for comment.
