Betway calls end of transfer market offering "the right thing to do"

Betway has decided to stop offering markets related to player transfers, in an effort to tighten up on responsible gambling.

The move coincided with the English Premier League’s return on 17 June, with the operator now no longer offering any odds on the movement of players via ‘football transfer’ or 'player next club’ markets.

Two England international footballers have been involved in betting charges this year. In March, Daniel Sturridge was suspended from all football-related activity for four months, after being found guilty of breaking betting rules, by passing on insider information regarding a possible transfer move.

Defender Kieran Trippier was charged with misconduct by the Football Association (FA) in May, which is also thought to be regarding passing on insider information.

Strict betting rules forbids anyone involved in the game, from the Premier League down to level eight, from betting directly on all football-related matters, including matches or player transfers.

Betway called the banning of offering transfers the “right thing to do," and a grey area which has caused issues in the past.

Betway said: “We believe that betting on football should be about what happens on the pitch. The FA has strict rules on betting and we feel that offering odds on players to move to specific clubs highlights a grey area which has caused issues in the past. It is best removed as an option.

“When there are hundreds of prices and markets offered on most games, this is part of the football betting experience that we are happy to see shut down.

“We also call on our competitors to join us in this self-imposed ban.”
