Kangwon Land resumes operations at limited capacity

The VIP play can seat no more than 68 people, while slot machines and electronic tables have the maximum capacity of 750 guests.

However, the company warned the operations of the gaming facilities could change according to the COVID-19 situation in the country.

Kangwon Land is the only casino in South Korea where the local nationals are allowed to play. The casino extended the shutdown quite a few times, including the recent week-long extension from 5 October to 12 October.

The venue initially closed in February at the start of the outbreak but reopened VIP areas in May. The casino was once again closed mid-August.

Due to the most recent closure from August to October, the company expects to lose close to KRW62.7bn ($53.9m). The estimated total of casino revenues for 2020 is KRW498bn ($430m), a 67% drop compared to the last year.

Also, according to The National Gambling Control Commission, Kangwon Land outperformed the foreigner-only casinos in 2019; the gambling turnover for the casino was KRW1.48 trillion against KRW1.44 trillion, a combined turnover for the country’s other casinos. But Kangwon Land will likely lose the leading position this year since it spent the most time closed, compared to other big casinos in the country.
