The American Gaming Association (AGA) recently reported commercial gaming revenue figures for Q3 2020 had reached $9bn, 80% of the total sums recorded for Q3 2019.

Quarterly revenue was up 294% compared to Q2; its report stated the ongoing health and safety measures might slow the industry's recovery, although the Q3 results are very promising.

And the ANR, a non-profit organisation, has used the report to try to debunk the idea smokefree policies could lead to decreased casino revenue.

Based on the AGA's data, smokefree casinos in Arkansas, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio and South Dakota show growth compared to previous years.

Bronson Frick, director of advocacy for ANR, said: "The AGA’s report shows casinos with smokefree policies have experienced year-over-year revenue increases or remained relatively stable, a remarkable feat given unprecedented capacity restrictions due to COVID-19.

"Most importantly, casinos with 100% smokefree policies, such as in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, have kept nearly all of their employees COVID-free."

During the pandemic, 135 sovereign tribal gaming venues implemented smokefree policies, and close to 1,000 gaming properties don’t allow smoking indoors.

ANR stated that a smokefree environment works better with the COVID-19 safety measures: "We urge gaming operators everywhere to adopt 100% smokefree indoor policies to protect the health of their employees and guests, nearly 75% of whom prefer smokefree casinos."
