Jeju Council approve request for casino despite survey investigation
By Violeta Prockyte

When asked about possible survey manipulation, Jeju Island Tourism Bureau chief Kim Jae-woong explained the casino industry’s impact assessment was done for the first time, and some inadequacies were unavoidable.

The application to move the current Jeju casino to a new location will now face the plenary session, and Governor Won Hee-ryong will have the final say. The casino will be relocated from Jeju Grand Hotel into the new Jeju Dream Tower, and the overall size of the gaming floor will expand approximately five times. The new casino will also provide 150 gaming tables and 300 machines.

“We will ensure compliance with employment regulations, such as maintaining 80% of residents and 80% of youth employment,” said the committee about the decision to move forward with the application. They will also prepare “concrete solutions for social side effects, such as on housing rights, learning rights, and crime, which the local community is concerned about.”
