Swedish Gambling Authority fines Betway SEK 100,000 for bonus violation
By Gambling Insider

According to the SGA, customers were repeatedly able to take advantage of Betway’s short-lived 200% match bonus marketing promotion which launched in June.

This was intended for select customers, but was incorrectly made available to all players registered in its database. In total, 53 bonuses were credited to 52 customers before Betway corrected its mistake.

The Super Group-owned sports betting company contested that no customers were negatively impacted and anyone who received an offer was proactively contacted via email.

Moreover, Betway stated that it has removed the ability for employees to make marketing campaigns available from its back-office management system, and provided further training to all relevant staff.

While the SGA maintained that Betway had offered an “illegal” bonus, it acknowledged that steps had been taken to amend its mistake and mitigate harm.

“The Swedish Gambling Authority considers that Betway Limited has provided reliable information that the marketing campaign was a mistake and that the company has tried to minimise the damage that has occurred,” concluded the SGA.

“The Swedish Gambling Authority finds that the violation has been limited in time and number of players. Betway Limited has, upon immediate detection of the infringement, taken corrective action, as well as action to ensure what happened should not be repeated.”

While this issue directly affected players, Betway’s quick response prompted the SGA to judge this case as “less serious” and that, alongside a penalty fee, “one remark may therefore be considered an adequate intervention.”
