Woman handed suspended prison sentence in Suncity investigation case
By Gambling Insider

The sentence was handed down after the woman refused to provide any statements during the investigation into the illegal online gambling and money laundering case involving Alvin Chau Cheok-wa, Founder of junket group Suncity.

At the end of November 2021, 11 people, including Chau, were arrested for offences involving criminal association, illicit gambling exploitation as well as money laundering.

One of those detained at the time was a woman named Ho, who was believed to be a Senior Executive at Suncity.

In a statement issued by the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) it was indicated that during the investigation into the case, Ho refused to provide answers to any questions, even after being informed of her rights and duties.

Her refusal concluded with the MP ordering her detention.

After the hearing, the judge said that, in addition to denying any criminal acts, the woman “did not express any remorse” for her actions and was sentenced to a suspended nine-month prison sentence.

The MP has ordered pre-trial detention for five out of the 11 defendants, including Chau, with the other six subject to the term of identity and residence, provision of security, periodical presentation to the police; and prohibition of leaving from Macau.

According to the Macau Penal Code, if a witness refuses to testify without just cause, they risk imprisonment from six months to three years.
