GambleAware to launch first-ever gambling harm campaign for women
By Gambling Insider

New analysis, commissioned by the charity’s Chief Executive, Zoe Osmund, brings to light how up to one million women across the UK are at risk from gambling harm.

This has been backed up by statistical data that shows female-focused gambling websites typically witness a spike of 29% between December and March each year, in comparison to other months.

As part of the new campaign, several awareness and information materials will be published, including a four-minute video starring presenter Angelica Bell. In the video, the presenter speaks to various gambling and health experts to understand the challenges women face when experiencing gambling harm, and the unique stigma surrounding them.

A new TV advert, also going live on 31 January, aims to increase female awareness of gambling issues. In the advert, a woman is so distracted by a gambling app on her phone she fails to realise what’s going on around her, until the funds in her account run out.

The campaign will also include materials for women already suffering from problem gambling, including how to spot the signs when help is needed, and where to go to find professional guidance.

In similar news, Swansea University published a study undertaken in partnership with the Royal Air Force (RAF) Benevolent Fund, highlighting how serving RAF personnel were more likely than a typical member of the general public to suffer from gambling harm.

The study estimates that 2% of servicemen and women are currently suffering from symptoms of problem gambling, while a further 13.7% were at risk.
