Released by the Macau Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ), May’s figure is, however, a 25% increase from April 2022, when GGR amounted to MOP2.67bn.

April’s figure is the lowest of the year so far, with May the second-lowest. Macau GGR reached its highest level so far this year in February, with MOP7.75bn. January and March reported totals of MOP6.34bn and MOP3.67bn respectively.

May’s year-on-year decline of 68% meanwhile is essentially equal to the lowest year-on-year decline in 2022 so far, with April’s figure representing a 68.1% decline. March also saw a substantial decline of 55.8%, with January GGR declining 20.9%.

February 2022 is the only month that has reported a positive year-on-year change, with GGR climbing 6.1%.

The latest figure from DICJ now means that GGR for 2022 so far stands at MOP23.79bn, which is a 44% decline from this stage of 2021, when GGR totalled MOP42.48bn.

It’s the biggest decline in terms of cumulative revenue so far in 2022, taking over April’s year-on-year decline of 36.2%, and March’s 24.8%. In January and February, the declines were 20.9% and 8% respectively.

As reported by GGRAsia, May’s figure comes amid weak travel sentiment in mainland China, particularly for cross-provincial and cross-border trips, along with tighter border controls. Mainland China is currently the only region to have a largely quarantine-free travel arrangement with Macau.
