PokerStars joins the Portuguese Online Betting and Gambling Association
By Gambling Insider

PokerStars has announced it has joined the Portuguese Online Betting and Gambling Association (APAJO) as an affiliate member.

Since its launch in 2018, APAJO has represented operators and members in discussions regarding regulator, government and legislator matters.

The committee also developed a Responsible Gambling Manual, which features a wide range of additional recommendations that exceed those required by law.

João Saraiva, Planning & Strategy Manager for Portugal at PokerStars, said: "We are delighted to join APAJO and look forward to sharing our expertise from other licensed jurisdictions to support APAJO in promoting a responsible and safe play environment.

“We have high ambitions for this market, and we can’t wait to start working together with APAJO."

As PokerStars is part of Flutter Entertainment, this move aligns with the parent company’s strategy to expand into additional regulated markets.

However, PokerStars isn't the only company to see the potential in the country, as MGA Games recently signed an agreement with Bwin.pt to expand its presence in the Portuguese market.

Ricardo Domingues, President of the Board of APAJ, said: “APAJO is pleased to welcome into its group one of the leading international brands and an operator which has been in the market since 2016.

“We look forward to working with PokerStars to promote an entertaining, safe and sustainable environment for online gambling in Portugal.

“APAJO has ambitious plans for 2023 and PokerStars will play an important role in driving these forwards.”

Other members who joined the APAJO include Betano, Betclic, Bwin, Casino Portugal, ESC Online and Solverde.pt.

Domingues continued: “We also would like to use this opportunity to renew our invitation to the other licensed operators to join.”
